A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step One thousand, one hundred and thirty Buddhist monks broke the record for the Longest Journey walking on flower petals on the fourth Dhammachai Dhutanga pilgrimage, having travelled an incredible 485 km (301.36 miles) on foot across Thailand. (2015) One year , for the annual color show at Keizer Arts in Keizer, Oregon, the color Orange was chosen. I went through several ideas about what I might do for this show. Truth be told, I am not particularly crazy about the color Orange. So I did a little research, and discovered the pilgrimage of the Buddhist monks across Thailand. I set upon my own journey , creating a collage, that ended up winning Best of Show that year. (2021) Painstakingly cutting out dozens of flowers and petals for the "flower petal road" and then creating the robe and feet out of maps using as much of Thailand as possible, along with surrounding Asian countries. Giving it all an orange hue with colored pencils and colored inks. Below are step by step images of the Creation of this piece, which was purchased and now lives in a private collection. In January I was approached to visit Historic Sotterley and discuss a possible selection of classes to be given once a month, May to October. I saw the former plantation for the first time, and learned a little of what was being asked regarding the classes.
After more visits, emails and discussions with St. Mary's County Arts Council, who had referred me and would be giving a grant for the classes, and Historic Sotterley, who would be offering the classes on their site- I came up with 6 creative classes that incorporated something from the site or the sites history. Due to difficult circumstances May's class was pushed to June- so there were two classes, and then July and August have been bumped to September and October, thereby having two per month as well. ANY wwaaayyyyyy...... The first class we walked through the gorgeous gardens, looked at all the flowers and butterflies, returned to the barn and painted our favourites using watercolor pencils. The second class we walked about a bit, collecting 3d objects (we were hoping for some feather gathering but not many were found) then returned to the barn to create unique-to-each-person pop up cards. The Elsewise Art studio and classroom... coming together .
Been in place for month and a half. Still some tweaking to do. Still some furniture and supplies to bring in and sort and art to put up. But it's looking good. It's been a journey to get here. Yep... Classes.
